The Board of Zoning Appeals consists of five (5) members appointed by the Athens City Council: one (1) designated member of the Athens City Council (Mayor or a Councilperson designee), one (1) appointed members of the Planning Commission, and three (3) members appointed at large. Board of Zoning Appeals meetings are held at the Municipal Building located at 815 N. Jackson Street on the third Wednesday of each month at 9:00 a.m. and at such other times as the Board may determine. All meetings of the Board are open to the public. The duty of the Board of Zoning Appeals is to hear and decide appeals where the petitioner believes that there is an error in any order, requirement, permit decision, determination, or refusal made by the building inspector or other administration official. The board also hears and decides requests for interpretation of the zoning map, applications for uses on review and applications for variances.
